Enhance the OrangeTheory app by adding the ability to capture and track the max heart rate of members during workouts. This will provide members with a valuable new tool for monitoring and improving their fitness levels and progress.
The Orangetheory app's lack of MaxHR tracking prevents users from accurately tracking their fitness levels and progress, customizing workouts, and fully engaging with the fitness experience. This limits users' ability to achieve their fitness goals and may reduce app usage.
Additionally, the absence of MaxHR tracking limits progress sharing, feedback, and support, which are crucial components of the Orangetheory community experience.
To create a maximum heart rate feature for the Orangetheory mobile app, we followed a process that included understanding the scientific basis of maximum heart rate, selecting the appropriate calculation method, and examining other apps for inspiration.
Once the data was calculated, we developed, tested, and refined the feature based on user feedback, resulting in a prototype for testing and eventual implementation.

We conducted our activities based on four main personas, which were created by amalgamating the common types found in the Orangetheory Fitness member pool.

The flow starts with the launch screen, and from there, users are directed to the home screen card that displays both old and new values and links to the feature educational content, including videos, text, and external articles available via branches from the home screen.
The main feature can be accessed via two paths: integrated into the performance summary or as a stand-alone capability. In addition to these core features, we have introduced some additional capabilities, such as launch screens and video educational content.
Collaborating with the CTO, Head of UX, and another OTF UX Designer, we held workshops to brainstorm and refine basic concepts that we believed would provide the best user experience. Once we reached a consensus, we presented our ideas to the product and engineering teams, as well as marketing.
To finalize the content strategy, design, and interaction workflows, we sought feedback from internal users, coaches, studio managers, and a select group of members.
The design and layout followed the pattern we established in the OrangeTheory Mobile Style Guide and Design System
After several rounds of validation of the concepts and initial design, usability testing, and refinement, feedback was highly positive. Since we were able to reach out and request a truncated implementation timeline, the feature was able to be launched at the convention by our CEO.
The feature was extremely well received by our members, who overwhelmingly raved about it and expressed their satisfaction that their request for this long-desired feature had finally been delivered by OTF.
The delivery timeline was considerably condensed. We had the initial delivery runway drastically shortened by leadership. They wanted a version of the feature in app in time for the launch at San Diego 2022 convention. This caused us to strip out supporting content and shorten the awareness and education push that was to be a part of the run up to go live.
Some key dependencies outside of the mobile space that were promised to be in place for the project were not able to be completed. This required some simplification from the initial vision for feature, but the overall functionality was not affected.
We were able to meet the request shortened launch timeframe and had some fast follow to address some of the functionality we had to cut in order to meet the timeline. More follow ups and enhancement were proposed for Q1 and beyond as response to the feature being incredibly positive.
The challenge now will be to ensure that the continued perfection and refinement of MaxHR continue.
